Dr Eugene Anthony Zeller

September 27, 1947 ~ October 7, 2017 (age 70) 70 Years Old
Eugene A. Zeller, DVM passed away on Saturday October 7, 2017 at the age of 70. Beloved husband of 48 years to Carolyn Scherer Zeller. Devoted father to Stephanie Zeller Robert (Jimmy) and Emily Zeller Lemann, DVM (Jason). Loving grandfather to five grandchildren who affectionately called him “Pappy,” Nina, Reese, and James Robert and Anna Kate and Olivia Lemann. He is also survived by his sister, Sylvia Zeller Bringewatt (Mark) and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Eugene and Louise Baumann Zeller.
He was born and lived his life in New Orleans, LA, the city that he loved. Dr. Zeller is a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School (1965), and Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine (1971). He poured his heart into practicing his profession in the Uptown New Orleans area for 46 years. He established Freret Veterinary Hospital and then relocated to the present Maple Small Animal Clinic. He mentored many local veterinarians, most notably his daughter, Emily, who followed in his footsteps. He was an inspirational figure as a veterinarian, but more importantly in the kindness he had for humanity. Dr. Zeller was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, where he served as president three times in his career. He also served on the board of the LA-SPCA. Dr. Zeller was also a long-time member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees. He was an avid LSU and Saints fan. He enjoyed playing tennis, reading and meditating on the Bible, gardening, walking his dogs, dining out in New Orleans restaurants, cooking, listening to country music, and playing with his five grandchildren. He was famous for his crawfish boils and his love of Mardi Gras. With his joy-filled smile, Dr. Zeller was a friend to everyone. The gift of his legacy is defined and rooted in one word: love. To know him was to love him.
