Matias J. “Mat” Grau, Sr. died peacefully on June 21, 2017. He was 98. He was born in New Orleans on November 17, 1918, to James and Lillian Grau. Beloved husband of 63 years to the late Shirley Roth Grau. He was the loving father of Judy Grau Meibaum (Andrew); Gary Grau, Sr. (Mary Ann); Matias “Mat” Grau, Jr. (Leah); and Jean Ann Grau Boudreaux. He was the grandfather of Andrew Meibaum III (Susan); Christopher Meibaum (Wendy); Stacy Grau; Gary Grau, Jr.; Matias Grau III (Leslie); Ben Grau (Camey); Erin Trahan (Jeramie); Brett Grau (Regina); Stephen Boudreaux; Brad Boudreaux; and Scott Boudreaux. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. He was the beloved uncle of Virginia Faust Szczepanski (Ski). He was a parishioner and member of the Fathers’ Club of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church until 1972 and then a parishioner of St. Raphael Catholic Church until his death. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII stationed in the Pacific Theater. After 31 years of service, he retired in 1976 from the Naval Air Base at Alvin Calendar Field as assistant fire chief. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home (3827 Canal St.) on Monday, June 26, 2017, from10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass.
