Sister Angela Ashbey, a Sister of the Living Word (nee Arlene Loretta Ashbey) passed away on January 11, 2022 after a long illness, having been a resident of Our Lady of Wisdom, New Orleans. Sister Angela was born June 21, 1940 to Arledge Henry Ashbey and Lillian May Kratzberg.  She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Linda Ashbey; cousin, Mary Ann Morris; nieces and nephews; many friends in the Sisters of Christian Charity and the Sisters of the Living Word; and her dear friend, Agnes Tranchina.  She was educated by the Sisters of Christian Charity at St. Raphael’s, New Orleans.  She was an elementary teacher in the Chicago area and North Little Rock, AK.  She taught at St. Raphael’s , St. Francis Assisi, St. Alphonsus and St. Mary Magdalene in New Orleans and Metairie. Later she was a Pastoral minister at St. Elizabeth Seton, Kenner, LA, St. John the Baptist, Brusly, LA, St. Mary’s of Kikapoo, IL, St. Brendan, Mexico, MO and Wynhoven Health Care Center, Marrero, LA.  Besides teaching, she loved coaching children in various sports. She was not afraid to speak up for those in need and powerless.
Sister was very active in her ministry and was well loved.  In her later years, she was bedridden and offered her suffering, praying for others daily, cheering people up with phone calls and cards.  She prayed diligently to Our Lady of Prompt Succor for protection for New Orleans. May she rest in peace. A funeral mass honoring Sister Angela will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 4921 W Metairie Ave, Metairie, LA 70001.
