Tribute

Captain Charlie Burd IV, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away March 17, 2023. A native New Orleanian who’s passion was the waters. Charlie was a United States Merchant Mariner for over 50 years with the last 20 years running anchors as tug boat captain with Crosby Tugs. He grew up on the beaches of Grand Isle and was an excellent swimmer. He even saved his uncle from drowning on the beach in Waveland. Charlie knew his charts like the back of his hand. He loved the water and life on his boat. He was also a lifelong learner who enjoyed reading and learning other skills including real estate, carpentry, and electrician.

As a child, Charlie was an altar boy, which instilled in him his Catholic faith. He was very proud of his heritage as an Irish Italian New Orleanian. Charlie graduated from Saint Leo the Great primary school, graduated high school at Cor Jesu, and attended Delgado for professional courses.

Charlie loved life and lived his with no regrets. He played hard and loved hard. He was fun loving and always laughing and cracking jokes with his family and friends. He was hard headed and strong like “Toro the Bull”!

His children were everything to him. He always put his family first no matter what. He was a generous, protective and loving father, grandfather and husband. Charlie died on St. Patrick’s Day. There will never be another Charlie Burd. New Orleans lost an icon this Friday. Fair winds and following seas Captain. Rest in Peace.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents Charles C Burd III and Rosemary Burd, his brother, Gary Burd.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary M Burd, his children: Charles C. Burd V, Jeremy Burd (Rebecca), Ashley Burd Castaing (Sean) and Trey Scott, his sisters: Deborah Scott, Katherine Uhle (Daniel) and Dawn Pitcher (Raymond), his grandchildren: Jordan, Lola, Charlie VI, and Declan, and his nephews : Kevin, Raymond, and Thomas.
