Dr Zeller was such a nice man. I work with CKCSC, USA Rescue he took such great care of three of our dogs. And never ever asked to be paid for his services. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.

I only knew Dr. Zeller as "my" vet. But even in that role, that he so profoundly impacted my life speaks volumes; I wish I had been lucky enough to know him outside of the vet clinic. He saved my lab, Jacques', life more than once. He compared Jacques to his beloved "Dixie," but dealt with Jacques' special needs--mainly epilepsy--as if he held Dixie's life in his hands. But for Dr. Zeller, I would not have enjoyed 14-years with my beloved pup. But most importantly, but for Jacques, I would have missed out on the truly beautiful soul of Dr. Zeller. Just a month ago, we discussed options because I am in search of another dog. When I get that dog, no matter what, Dr. Zeller will always be "my" vet. May his memory be for a blessing and may he live on in all of those furry and not-so-furry friends he touched. - Trisha
Message from Ben Franklin Class of 1965
October 17, 2017 10:07 PM

Since we all received the sad news of Gene's passing, the class has been sharing our fond memories of Gene, as well as our sadness. He helped us with support and with friendship when we needed it. And he helped us see the good side of others, because that is what he saw. And when we all reconnected at our reunions, he reminded us of how lucky we were to share those fun-and-angst filled teenage years with him and with each other. His passing leaves a void, and a part of our young selves goes with him. But it also helps us reconnect with each other and appreciate what we had and have. And Gene would like that.

Our condolence to all of Gene's family, and friends.

Dr. Zeller took amazing care of my mother's dachshund, Patty. Patty had a myriad of illnesses, and Dr. Zeller always made time for my mother and Patty, notably on his time off. I met him on one of my visits home, and I know first hand how generous, kind, and compassionate he was. The small animal community in New Orleans is left with a huge void without Dr. Zeller.

When I moved to New Orleans with a dog and cat in the mid 1970s an acquaintance recommended a "new young vet" in town. Said he grew up on the same block with this guy and that he was always wonderful with animals. Well that was, of course, Dr. Zeller and my pets have been with him ever since. He really was the best. And he really will be missed.

We are so very thankful to have known such a wonderful man. His warmth and kindness he gave our dogs over the years was that of true love. The world was a better place with him in it and our dogs and family are truly lucky to have known Gene. I take solace knowing that he is in heaven looking after many of the pets he treated over the years. Our dogs Shadow and Blue truly looked forward to going to see him and will miss him as well as my mother and me.

My name is Brian Ghere.
I am a Veterinarian .
I want to express my sympathies to Dr Zeller's family. I too am deeply saddened by Dr Zeller's passing.

I was so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with and be mentored by Dr Zeller .
Vet school taught me the science of being a Veterinarian , but Dr Zeller taught me the art of using that knowledge to help not only the pets, but the people who cared for them. His many phrases of wisdom still ring in my ears and guide me today . He was such a tremendous and positive influence on me and I will always look up to him . I know that I owe a great deal of my success and happiness in this profession to Dr Zeller.
Thank you , Thank you , a million times over Thank you Dr Zeller....

I too will miss you greatly .

Dearest Carolyn and Emily, the rest of the family at home and at the clinic,
Joe and I send our condolences to you all. We are so sad to hear of Gene's passing. He was one of the best people I've known, and I knew him since high school. He was a great, not just good, vet. He had compassion and a way to connecting to all the animals in his care, a terrific diagnostician as well. My cats and dog loved him, as did Joe and I and so many friends who would only let him and Emily and Gene's chosen staff care for their pets. I know this must be such a terrible, sudden loss. I wish I could be with you to celebrate Gene's life and add my support to the many others who would like to give you all some comfort and solace, and express our love and respect for a very fine man.

To the Zeller family at this sorrowful time we extend our deepest condolences. We are so grateful for the time, knowledge and experience Dr. Zeller gave to our son Brandon. He was a major influence in his life. Brandon always had kind words to say about Dr. Z and how he loved to entertain. Dr. Zeller loved his family, staff and his animals. He will truly be missed. Next May when Brandon graduates from LSU Veterinarian Medical School I know his smile & spirit will be shining down on Brandon. Rest in Heaven Dr. Zeller. Thanks for everything you've done in my son's life!

I am so saddened by the loss of my dear friend Gene who treated my many weiner dogs over the last 40 yrs. Originally met when our children attended Clifton Ganus school in New Orleans. We followed this compassionate vet from Freret to Maple st vet. He was never too busy to give total care to the dog or to me the owner who may need an explanation or comfort. He once came to my house to pick up our pet who had been hit by a car late at night so our kids wouldn't see the dead animal in the street. I think it hurt him when we had to euthanize our dear pets. I will surely miss him.

The news of your passing just hit me like a brick. As I move from city to city after leaving New Orleans, you are the benchmark to which I compare any vet in whose hands I entrust my dogs' health and well-being. To date not a one has come close to your professionalism, your candidness, your thoughtfulness, and your genuine, warm concern for the animals you cared for and their owners... I doubt anyone ever will. You were, without a doubt, one of a kind. Farewell, my friend.

We were so very, profoundly saddened by the news of Dr. Zeller's passing. For almost 30 years he and his associates have been the only veterinarians our pets have seen, through storms, floods, moves and life events. Dr. Zeller literally took care of George and Penelope, our cocker spaniels since the day they were born until the day they were lovingly euthanized almost 20 years later, and all of the other pets that came into and out of our lives since. He was such a gentle soul and kind person. He will be sorely missed.

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Zeller. (He tried to get me to call him Gene over the years, but he will always be Dr. Zeller to me). He was our vet for over 20 years and several pets, and he was always kind, caring, and willing to take the time to explain all the options. He should be proud of the practice he built and the staff he assembled, as well as the other vets I know he mentored. Although we now see Dr. Emily for our latest set of furry friends, I can see his kindness and skill in her and all of the others in the Freret/Maple veterinary family.

Mrs. Zeller, Emily, family & staff - We are just terribly saddened to hear this news. Dr. Zeller has been a constant in our lives since we relocated here in 2004. He has helped us through many things - splenic cancer, lead poisoning, a nasal osteosarcoma, infected puncture wound surgeries, serious eye infection, diabetes, Cushing's disease and loss. Through all that, he came to feel like family, He was always smiling, caring and kind. My kids loved him, especially my 7 yr. old daughter who, at least sometimes, hopes to be a vet just like Dr. Zeller. We will carry him in our hearts always. We feel blessed to have known him.

With deepest sympathy,

Dr. Z, as he was known in my household of a rag tag, several generations of cats and dogs, was a constant in my pets' lives. We followed him from Maple to Freret to Audubon to Maple again. First, he saved my German Shepherd, Blanche, from a swiftly growing cancer in the late 90's and told me that she would most likely live another ten years. She did. I had little money at the time, and I was surprised to see so many "no charges" on the invoice; I had told him that I was newly employed in education. I paid the bill in full in spite of his offering a month by month payment. I was so grateful for his kindness; he knew that my heart was bigger than my wallet. Second, when I evacuated with my mother to Lake Charles during Katrina, I couldn't get my two special needs dogs into a kennel. We had no vaccination records. I finally went to a Dr. Anderson and told her, "My vet is the president of the Southeast Veterinary Association, and my dogs are on the following medications..." We got in. My name dropping worked. Last, when I was married, my husband, who was Bavarian, and I would drive or take the train to his parents' home from Munich to the Chiemsee area outside of Salzburg. We'd cross the Zeller River on every trip. Every time, we'd say, "We're crossing Dr. Zeller's river! Let's hide under the front seat!" This was before the carrier and leash rule.
Forever grateful!
From Heidi, Blanche, Chouchou, Tassilo, Fritzi, and Reggie, the canines; Spot, Gretl, Helgi, Tog the Dog, Finny, Alfonso Garcia, Isidora, Hank, Erika, Buras, Riley, and Hershey, a few of the cats.

My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Zellar and his extended family at Maple Small Animal Hospital. Dr. Zellar was a shining example of kindness and compassion. I began bringing my pets to him over 20 years ago on Freret Street. He supported my family through many years of growth and change and truly loved his work. He couldn't have picked a more appropriate profession and I never considered taking my pets anywhere else. He loved what he did and I am forever grateful for the love, support, and exceptional care he gave to all members of my family. Both humans and pets. My heart is broken as I'm sure are many. Our sincerest condolences to the Zeller family and to the Maple Small Animal Clinic family on the passing of Dr. Eugene Zeller.

We moved from New Orleans three years ago but keep up with local news. While reading NOLA.com, we were shocked and saddened to see Dr. Zeller's obituary. What a loss for the city and his adoring patients and customers.

Dr. Zeller passionately cared for our pets - Rallo, Bizou, T-Too, Hank and Tripper - and affectionately cared for my wife Jenny and I as we said goodbye to Rallo and Bizou through tears.

He will forever live on in our hearts as a supremely kind and generous man who loved his profession, loved the animals in his care and loved the humans he helped along the way.

We are thankful that Dr. Zeller touched our lives.

We are extremely saddened that Dr. Gene has passed away. His dedicated caring for generations of my furry (accident prone) children will be sorely missed. There are numerous tales of his dedicated service, but I'll mention my favorite. My cat Tex somehow got his paw stuck in the frame of a sofa bed. After trying everything to free him, we called Maple Street in desperation. Dr. Gene and his assistant made a house call. Lying on the floor, Dr. Gene shot him up with a tranquilizer, letting him relax and pop free. He probably saved my kitty's leg. The cats and dogs of
uptown will miss his commitment.

To the Zeller families - both personal and professional - Our hearts go out to all of you at the loss of such a genuine, kind, and caring man. Dr. Gene, as our dogs knew him, guided us through many adoptees through several decades, caring for us all as though we were his own. He treated everyone with respect always. He was honest to his core, direct and thorough, kind and caring, funny and serious, all with just the right dosage... He taught us all how to be better to each other and to all animals. We were so lucky to have him care for our cats and dogs for more than 30 years; he had such kindness and humor. Once, after he had treated my dog Bob for something minor, he said, "Now, if it had been Wilbur (my black cat who bit everyone in the office eventually), I'd have to charge double!" Cannot convey how sad we are that we have lost Dr. Zeller. He took care of our "Orleans", a special needs cat that we adopted. Always enjoyed his sense of humor. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Dr. Zeller was a wonderful person who took great care of our dogs Frosty and Otis, and always remembered us when we saw him over the years. He was genuinely thoughtful, caring and kind. So sorry that he is gone. We would like to visit at Schoen but will not be available. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dr. Zeller was truly the best as they come. I am heartbroken and will miss him terribly! I know he loved his work, but I think his clients loved him more, if that's even possible. Thank you, Dr. Zeller, for everything you did for all of my cats (even the strays that I took claim to)! You will be missed by all!

To the Zeller family and to the Maple Small Animal Clinic family, the Joneses are heartbroken to hear of Dr. Zeller’s passing. The love and care he showed his furry patients – and as he loved to say – those on the other end of the leash – was deep, wise and true. Like so many others, he guided our family through puppyhoods with humor and sound advice. He saw us through illnesses and emergencies, and through the inevitable sorrow of letting go. Our deepest and heartfelt condolences are extended to the family. With love and gratitude, Tad, Cynthia, Caroline, Mary Helen Jones - and Phoebe, Cosette and Miss Moppet.

Thank you so much Dr. Zeller for the one on one, special care that you gave to our first puppy. You had a very special, gifted way with animals and I (and my dog) were so lucky to have you as our veterinarian. Your calm and positive energy always made things so much easier for our dog. I know he loved seeing you, and we did, too. You will be greatly missed.

He was truly a special man a One of a kind!!!! He was not just an ordinary VET he was a friend a caring loving person. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time of grief. My condolences. Dr. Zeller was actually my mom's first cousin and what a wonderful man he was. We truly loved him. He is now home with Aunt Louise and I am sure her arms are open wide for him.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Zeller's passing. It was too soon for too kind a vet to leave this world. Dr. Zeller was the best vet a pet owner could ask for, and I always trusted his advice on the care of my many pets who were his patients. To his family, practice associates, and numerous customers, please accept my condolences on the loss of Dr. Zeller. He will be missed.

We are so sad to hear of this news. Dr Zeller was a caring and comforting veterinarian and a good soul. We feel fortunate that we had the opportunity to have him care for our pets over the years. Going to his practice is such a wonderful experience. Its such a caring and friendly place, which came from Dr. Zeller and filtered on down to everyone there. We will miss him but know that he has left his practice in good hands. He is now everywhere at once & tripping the light fantastic.
