Francis Michael Toups

F. Michael Toups, 79, of New Orleans, LA, passed away on January 4, 2021 at his home after a yearlong battle with cancer.
He was born in Thibodaux, LA on March 29, 1941, son of the late Stan and Doris Toups and brother to Larry Toups and to the late Gayle Toups. He is survived by his wife, Angelo DeLony Toups, his two daughters, Elizabeth Toups Sharpton and Phoebe DeLony Tooke and grandson Davis William Sharpton.
From a young age, Michael knew he wanted to be an architect. He graduated from Tulane University in 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and from Princeton University in 1973 with a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning.  In 1983, he and Errol Barron formed the architectural firm Errol Barron/Michael Toups Architects. They closed the firm in 2016 having designed many award winning buildings including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the St. James Church in Fairhope, Alabama, which received a national AIA (American Institute of Architects) award. But, his true masterpiece was the home he built and designed for his family where he lived for over 30 years. It exemplified his architectural skills and attention to detail with his ability to make a house feel like a home.

Michael was an avid gardener and could often be found working in his garden listening to his radio. In the years after he retired, Michael became a master gardener and volunteered at the Botanical Garden at City Park.

Michael, also known by his grandson as “Pops”, was a kind reliable person with a boisterous laugh who loved people. In addition to architecture and gardening, he was a lover of art, napping and good food…especially desserts.
