John Arthur Stewart

John “Jack” Arthur Stewart departed this life on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at the age of 88 to be with his Lord and Savior.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Jean Marie Groth Stewart; his sister Lillian Irma Stewart Lange, 5 Children David (Sylvia), Pamela (Glenn) Wallace, Richard (Mimi), Mark (Mary Beth) and Michael (Isabel); 10 grandchildren, Justin Wallace, Suzanne Watt (Joey), Laura Wallace, Leigh Bagwell (Seth), Scott Stewart (Natalie), Meagan Forbes (Will), Keith Stewart, Matthew Stewart (Amanda), Charlotte and Kimberly Stewart; and 2 great-grandchildren Benjamin Stewart and Joseph Forbes,  and numerous nieces and nephews.  John was a lifelong New Orleans resident, loved this city and her history, most notably Mardi Gras, French Bread, Oysters, Boiled Crabs, Barq’s Root Beer and McKenzie Cinnamon Rolls.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents John and Lillian (Bauer) Stewart.   He was baptized and remained a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, where throughout his years, he served his Lord and his church in many roles, including President, Treasurer, Elder and Sunday School Teacher. 
Jack graduated from S. J. Peters (1946), earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education (Tulane 1950) and Master’s in Education (Loyola 1955).  Mr. Stewart began his career in 1951 and retired from the Orleans Parish School Board after many years of service to the children of New Orleans.  He held key positions, including teacher (McDonogh #9, Fortier), appointed principal at McDonogh #15 and McDonogh #19.   He spent most of his years at McMain Junior High and Magnet Secondary Schools.   He also served in the LA National Guard for ten years, leading R.O.T.C. during part of his enlistment.  Jack finished his career working at the OPSB Office as an Administrator retiring at the age of 56 in 1985.
After retirement from the school system, Jack could not stop working.  He spent 20 years as part-time chaplain, servicing the elderly at several senior facilities including The Lutheran Home and Good Samaritan.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday, October 15, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2624 Burgundy Street, New Orleans, LA 70117 beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a celebration of life service at Noon.  Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
