Joyce Anne Corcoran Fontenelle passed away on May 16, 2017. Joyce was the daughter of the late Edward James and Angelina Diliberto Corcoran and was born in New Orleans, LA on August 7, 1932. She was and always will be the High School Sweetheart and beloved wife of the late Scuddy F. Fontenelle, Jr. Joyce was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner of St. Benilde Catholic Church in Metairie, LA. She volunteered weekly at the St. Benilde Perpetual Adoration Chapel and was a member of the Parish “Cheramie’s” social club. She was a dedicated volunteer in the ICU Family Waiting Room at East Jefferson General Hospital, where she was celebrated as the Volunteer of the Month in October 2015. Joyce was a Charter Member of the Metairie Ridge Garden Club, a former President and an active member until her death. She enjoyed many years as an active member of a Bible Study and weekly Recitation of the Holy Rosary at the home of Deacon Raymond and Marilyn Heap. Her membership in the Lions Club of Metairie was one that she took very seriously and she was very dedicated to the values of Lionism, having served as Secretary and Tail Twister in the club. Joyce was considered a ‘Grand Dame’ of the Krewe of Carrollton Carnival Club. Joyce is survived by her devoted children, Cathy Fontenelle, Laurie F. Abate (Edward), Scuddy F. Fontenelle, III (Sheila McInerney), Bonnie F. McCarty (Keaton “Sonny”) and Joylynn F. Hirdes (Gustavo Gonzalez). Joyce is survived by 13 grandchildren, Jeffrey E. McDonald, Christopher C. McDonald, Kathleen M. Windham, Ashley A. Witt of Virginia Beach, VA, Andrew J. Abate of Port Hueneme, CA, Aileen A. Acevedo of Virginia Beach, VA, Sarah A. Fontenelle-Smith, Scuddy F. Fontenelle, IV of New Haven, CT, Keaton M. McCarty, Jr., Sean M. McCarty, Ryan F. McCarty, Jonathan E. Hirdes and Jennifer L. Hirdes of Dallas, TX. Joyce was also a very proud “Nana” to her 25 Great-Grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Pamela C. Creath, her brothers, Edward J. Corcoran (Linda) and Michael F. Corcoran (Nancy) of Hermitage, TN., and her sisters-in-law Barbara C. Fontenelle, Carolyn F. Butler (Donnie) and Judy F. Himel, whose love and friendship she cherished. Her family will greatly miss her fabulous home cooking, amazing strength, and detailed stories of life in NOLA, of which they never tired, due to her remarkable memory!
