Mary Romano Kagan

Mary Romano Kagan, 71, died at her home in Harahan on Thursday, September 22, 2022. She was born to Salvatore (Sam) and Angelina (Prestigiacomo) Romano on November 25, 1950. A native of New Orleans, Mary and her husband, Bob (Robert M Kagan, Sr.), were married for 52 years. Their dates often included bowling and dancing. Mary loved Sunday suppers with family, and playing board games or cards, especially Scrabble and Bouré.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Lena Mae Richard (Lionel). She is survived by her loving husband, Robert M. Kagan, Sr., and children, Robert Kagan Jr. (Kay), Ryan Kagan, Robyn Harrington (Chuck), grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mary graduated high school from Sacred Heart Academy of Jesus Christ, where she chose to take business classes over college prep because “I hated school, I wasn’t going to do more.” Even though she disliked going to school, Mary had impressive typing and math skills. Mary was an accountant on and off after high school, taking breaks from work to care for her children and, later, her mother. Her first job was at Lusk Shipping Company.
Mary was the ultimate caregiver. She was often seen as the room-mom and volunteering in her kids’ elementary school cafeteria. No one was ever a stranger, and Mary showed her love by inviting you into her home and feeding you.
A memorial mass will be held on October 3, 2022. Visitation will be at St. Rita Church in Harahan at 11 AM. Mass will follow at 12 PM. Inurnment will follow at Cypress Grove Cemetery in New Orleans. A reception will follow. Arrangements entrusted to Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s honor can be made to the American Heart Association or the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI).
