Tribute

Mary Holt Myrick Langlois passed away on March 10, 2018 in New Orleans, LA. She was born March 14, 1936 in Monroe, Louisiana, to Mary Ella Sproles Myrick and Edwin Holt Myrick and spent her childhood in Girard and Rayville, Louisiana and lived her adult life in New Orleans. She is survived by John and his wife Mary and their children Emily and Paul of Nairobi, Kenya, and David and his wife Liz and their children Matthew and Abby of New Orleans. She was married to Nathaniel Langlois for 34 years. She committed herself to public and community service early in her life. After receiving her BA in sociology from Newcomb College and attending the Tulane School of Social Work, she began her career as a case worker for the Jefferson Parish, and later, the Orleans Parish Division of Child Welfare. In the 1980s, Mary was the Director of Volunteer Services at Tulane Medical Center. Her volunteer work included roles with the Tulane University Women’s Association Board of Directors, the Newcomb College Executive Committee, and Young Audiences of Louisiana, for which she was a leader in the 1970s. Serving as the Director of Development for Newcomb College, Mary guided Newcomb through its centennial celebration in 1986 and remained a devoted member of the Newcomb Alumni Association. Her experience at Newcomb and her membership to Chi Omega Sorority set the foundation for her adult life. Mary maintained a constant curiosity about the world as a world traveler and avid reader. Her travels to Europe, Central America and Africa gave her the opportunity to experience new cultures and to study their unique histories. As an avid reader, she delved in to the cultural history of the South, the intricacies of World War II and the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, making her memberships in the Tennessee Williams Society, the Stuart Clan, and Le Petite Salon a natural fit. She loved all things New Orleans and was an enthusiastic fan of its history, culture, music, and cuisine, and was a longtime supporter of the Historic New Orleans Collection. Mary was a lifelong member of the St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, participating in many roles including singing with the Chancel Choir. She passed away at the Poydras Home, an institution where she served on the Board of Trustees for eleven years, including as the Design and Program Chair for a major renovation and expansion of the home.
A memorial service will be held at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 27 at 3:00 PM with visitation starting at 1:30. Private interment will take place at the Masonic Cemetery in Rayville, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary Langlois to the Historic New Orleans Collection would be welcomed by the family. Arrangements by JACOB SCHOEN & SON.
