Philip Vernon Graham, Sr., died peacefully in his sleep sometime in the early morning hours on October 16, 2018 at the SE Louisiana Veterans Home in Reserve, LA, at the age of 90. Philip is survived by his son-in-law, Charles D. Morse and his step-grandson, Wayne Whitson. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Marian Serpas Graham, his second wife, Doris Whitson Graham, and his daughter, Phyllis Ann Graham. Philip was born on July 27, 1928 in New Orleans, LA to Philip Lee Graham and Maud Aldridge, their only child. He attended grade school in New Orleans, then moved to Alexandria, LA, and went to Bolton High School. He joined the US Navy in 1945 where he was trained as a cook and was honorably discharged in 1949. He applied for and was accepted into the New Orleans Fire Department. He was recalled to the Navy at the start of the Korean War. He returned to New Orleans after that was over, resumed his career in the Fire Department, married Marian Serpas and had two children with her. Philip retired from the Fire Department as a Captain and began a second career in the Louisiana Public Safety office as a Law Administrator. Philip and Marian were divorced and he then married Doris Whitson.
Philip was an accomplished dancer and he excelled at dance club events. He was a witty individual who loved jokes and who was passionate about his cooking skills. He was an active and dedicated member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He often volunteered at many of their functions. A funeral is scheduled on October 25, 2018, at JACOB SCHOEN & SON, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA. There will be a viewing starting at 11:30 A.M. and a Catholic service at 1:30 P.M. with a reception to follow. The family would like to thank Ochsner Medical Center North Shore in Slidell, Passages Hospice in New Orleans, and the SE Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve, LA, for their exceptional help and attention they gave to Philip while he was in their care.
