Sidney Thomas Jones, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home at the age of 94. Sidney is survived by two daughters, Sydney Elaine Jones Adair and Elaine Claire Jones Binder, his son-in-law Gregory Joseph Binder; four grandchildren, William Riggs (Jada), Chris Riggs (Tina), Jordan Marie Binder and Gregory George Binder; three great grandchildren, Deven, Tyler, and Kaylee Riggs. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Sidney was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Elaine Jourdan Jones; his parents General Glynne M. Jones, Sr. and Isabelle Singletary Jones Van Tyle; his brothers, Glynne M. Jones, Jr. and Oscar Jones; his great-granddaughter, Isabella Margaret Riggs; and his son-in-law, Michael Charles Adair. Sidney was a native of Slidell and a resident of New Orleans and Pass Christian for more than 60 years. Sidney, or S.T. to his family and friends, was a World War II Veteran who served in the Merchant Marines. After the war, S.T. continued his career on the seas, working as a ship’s captain on vessels of various sizes and traveling around the world. He retired at the age of 69 as a supply boat captain for oilrigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Although his family was his greatest love, S.T. also enjoyed painting, sailing, golf and entertaining those around him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 12:15 a.m. with visitation at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 a.m. Internment will follow at Lake Lawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve.
