Arthur Winthrop Bancroft departed this life on the morning of January 5, 2019, after a long battle with cancer. He was 72 years old.
He was born in Brookhaven, MS, on March 14, 1946, to Emory Bancroft (of Newton, MA) and Kathryn Weems Berry Bancroft (of La Plata, MD). He grew up in Arabi, LA, and graduated from Chalmette High School and Loyola University in New Orleans.
A consummate New Orleanian, he was a 34-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department, and a lover of music, food, culture, British racing cars, fishing and sunrises. He was a voracious reader and an avid fan of radio. He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America and the Fraternal Order of Police. He spent many hours volunteering with Jackson Barracks’ historical renovation team and at Touro Infirmary, and as many hours as possible in his beloved Pensacola, FL.
He is survived by, and will be grievously missed by, his children: Ryan (Jan) Bancroft, Sean (Amy) Bancroft, Justin (Julie) Bancroft and Lauren Bancroft, all of New Orleans. Also survived by his longtime companion and best friend, Mary Frances Welch; his sister, Kathryn Bancroft McNamara; his former wife of many years, Jeannette Kernion Bancroft; six grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of his life at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 12, 2019 in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of JACOB SCHOEN & SON, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and continue until service time. Burial will be private. Condolences may be expressed at www.schoenfh.com
