Russell B Guerin

Russell Benedict Guerin died peacefully in his sleep on August 12th at the age of 90. Just hours before his passing, he was laughing while surrounded by his family. Russell was a true Renaissance man. He possessed a wealth of knowledge in literature, local history, opera, and classical music. He was also an artist, fisherman, and loved to travel in his younger days. He was a devoted father, spouse, and adored his grandchildren—all who will honor his legacy. His fondest memories were of living in New Orleans, frequenting French Quarter haunts and summers spent in Clermont Harbor and Bay St. Louis. His historical research can be found at ‘https://www.hancockcountyhistoricalsociety.com/history/’ for which he received an Award of Merit (2022) by the state of Mississippi for his research and multiple publications. He was also previously named “Historian of the Year” by the Hancock County Historical Society. He was a proud alumnus and salutatorian of Holy Cross High School, class of 1950, and received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, graduating cum laude. He had an illustrious career at New York Life Insurance Company, spanning 40 years both as a manager and an agent. He was the devoted father of Michele Guerin Graf (Thomas), the late Nicole Guerin Bourgeois (Cary), Mignon Guerin Hovsepian (Mark), and Madeleine Guerin Palmer (Greg). He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Merle Higgins Guerin, and his eight grandchildren: Meredith and Rachel Graf, Chloe (fiancee Abby Switzer) and Lilli Bourgeois, Isaac and Michael Constans, Ross and Vivian Palmer, and former son-in-law, Joseph Constans. Brother of Wilfred L. Guerin, Jr., the late Roland J. Guerin, and the late Gloria Guerin Vizzini. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 AM on Monday, August 15th at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70119. Visitation will begin at 9:30.
