William O. Anglin

August 14, 1926 ~ February 16, 2021 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Tribute

William Oriel Anglin, 94, went home to be with the Lord on February 16, 2021 – fulfilling the second of his two dreams in life. William was born in George Town, Grand Cayman, (British West Indies), one of 11 children. At age 19, he left the Islands and worked as a Merchant Seaman. Upon arriving in America – fulfilling his first dream, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After leaving the military, he settled in New Orleans and married Lula Thomas, with whom he had seven children. Although he made many visits back to the Islands during his lifetime, he made New Orleans his permanent home for more than 60 years, during which time, he became a United States citizen.
While in New Orleans, he was employed in the hospitality industry, working as a Waiter at various upscale restaurants and hotels such as: The Roosevelt/Fairmont Hotel, The Plimsoll Club and Elmwood Plantation, to name a few. He was a member of St. James A.M.E church during his early years and a faithful member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church (prior to hurricane Katrina), attending regularly and supporting the church in various ways.
William was always full of life and energy. He enjoyed spending time cooking, watching sports such as: boxing, football, baseball, and he was especially fond of horse racing. He would frequent the New Orleans Fair Grounds racetrack regularly during racing season. More often, than not, he would “play the horses” several times a week. He was also known to love a good card game. However, after he retired, he returned to his first love—fishing! William was ready to fish just about anytime and anywhere! He seldom returned from a fishing trip empty handed and like most fishermen, he had his share of “fish stories” to tell.
William was preceded in death by two daughters, Mavis Anglin and Sanda Williams; his parents Christina and Joseph Anglin; six brothers, and two sisters.
His survivors include daughters: Lynette A Simmons (Robert), Cheryl A Jacques, Shawanda Guyton; sons: David (Stephanie), Lance S., (Gary) Anane (Andrea), Kirklin (Chrissy), William R (Valerie). sisters: Aldine and Matalee, and a legacy of twenty-one (21) grandchildren, eighteen (18) great-grandchildren, one (1) great, great grandchild and a host of nieces/nephews and grandnieces/grandnephews, nephew Maclern Anglin. William also leaves behind a host of other relatives and longtime friends, including Willie Irons and his wife Bertha, friends of more than 60 years.
Visitation will be Friday, March 5, from 4-7 pm at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. A home going service will be held at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 5276 Bullard Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70128, at 11 am on March 6, 2021. Rev. Dr. Johnathan C Richardson, officiating.
